Lost Pets

Champaign County Animal Control is located at the Animal Services Facility, 210 S. Art Bartell Road, Urbana, IL 61802. 217-384-3798.

All animals picked up as strays or impounded in the unincorporated area of the County and in municipalities that contract with the County for Animal Control Services are located at this facility. Follow this link for Animal Control contact information for your area.

Domestic Violence

A Pet's Place - a safe haven for pets - a safe and confidential program for companion animals belonging to victims of domestic violence that are staying at A Woman's Place in Urbana (217-384-4390) or BETH'S Place in Tuscola (217-253-6721). The location of the pets is kept confidential. A Pet's Place is staffed by veterinary medical students and staff volunteers affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

Low Cost Spay and Neuter Services

Notice: We are currently unable to take spay/neuter appointments due to an extreme back-log. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.

Cats - CCHS offers spay/neuter surgeries for low-income cat owners by appointment. The cost is $40.00 for a female and $30.00 for a male. This price includes sterilization, vaccinations (including Rabies), and flea treatment. A microchip is available for an additional $15 fee. To make an appointment, call CCHS at 217-344-7297 and ask for extension #11.  Leave a message, and a member of our Medical staff will call you back.  An appointment is required.

Dogs - CCHS offers spay/neuter surgeries for low-income dog owners by appointment, with prices based on weight.  To make an appointment, call CCHS at 217-344-7297 and ask for extension #11.  Leave a message, and a member of our Medical staff will call you back.

Champaign County Animal Control also offers low-cost cat spay/neuter surgeries at the Animal Services Facility on Art Bartell Road, Urbana. Surgeries are performed on Fridays and one Sunday per month. Call 217-384-3798 for more information.

Other local agencies that may be able to help with low cost cat sterilization include the Champaign Area Trap Spay Neuter and Adoption Program (Catsnap), 217-689-0770, and Prairieland Anti-Cruelty, 217-586-6616.

Financial Assistance

Companion Animal Resource and Education (CARE) Center - The Helping Paw Fund provides financial assistance for the care of companion animals in times of crisis or financial instability, including medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, and behavioral consultations in East-Central Illinois.

Poison Related Emergencies

If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435. Help is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

Wildlife Emergencies

University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Wildlife Medical Clinic. The Wildlife Medical Clinic accepts ill, injured, or orphaned wildlife (except for skunks and bats) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Emergency services are available 24 hours/day. Drop off injured animals at the front desk or emergency room (after hours) of the University of Illinois Small Animal Clinic at 1008 Hazelwood Drive, Urbana, IL.

Training and Advice

Animals Adopted from CCHS - If you're having a problem with your recently adopted pet, please call the shelter and speak with our Adoptions Staff or Animal Behavior Specialist about your concerns. If the problem is beyond our level of expertise, we will help you to find the assistance you need. 217-344-7297.

Pet-Related Education

The CARE Center's classes and programs strive to give people a better understanding of their pet's basic needs, open the lines of communication between companion animals and their people, and keep pets in their homes.

Dog Parks

Champaign Park District Dog Park - "Located on seven acres near the southeast corner of Windsor and Rising Roads, this park features a 4 foot fence, double-gated entry area, separate areas for large and small dogs, parking lot, and trash cans/dog waste stations."

Urbana Park District Dog Park - "The Urbana Park District Dog Park is a 10-acre space featuring a shaded area in the park's center and lots of open meadow for running." 1501 E. Perkins Road, Urbana.

Pet Loss and Grief Support

UI College of Veterinary Medicine C.A.R.E Pet Loss Hotline - "The Companion Animal Related Emotions Pet Loss Helpline is a confidential telephone service offered through the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. People who are either grieving the loss of a companion animal or are anticipating a loss are encouraged to call. "If you need a compassionate, understanding person to talk to, we are here to listen and to support you."

Animal Rescue and Sheltering

Hospice Hearts provides care to cats and dogs whose owners can no longer to care for them due to nursing home admission, serious illness, or death.  

CatSnap offers spay and neuter assistance and basic veterinary treatment - including flea and parasite treatment and routine vaccinations - to needy or unowned animals, typically cats. The organization also has a limited intake, adoption program. All animals are in foster homes or housed at the Champaign PetSmart.

Crosswinds Equine Rescue, located near Champaign and Danville, Illinois, provides rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming for at-risk horses, as well as owner education, training, and farrier services.

Feathered Friends Avian Rescue & Rehab offers rescue, rehabilitation, education, adoption, and consulting services for companion parrots.

Hands-4-Paws works with the Douglas County, Illinois, Animal Shelter to facilitate the legal and humane protection of domestic companion animals in Douglas County.

The newly formed Piatt County Animal Shelter  is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to establishing an animal shelter in Piatt County.

The Society for Hooved Animals' Rescue and Emergency  offers to help educate owners on the proper daily care and maintenance; vetting and hoof care as well as nutrition and emergencies. The society also rescues severely neglected horses and provides rehabilitation services and placement through adoption.
