Pets for Seniors

The National Council for Aging Care has published some great information about Pets for Seniors and Aging in Place.

Poison Related Emergencies

If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435. Help is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They may request a consultation fee by credit card.

Wildlife Emergencies

University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Wildlife Medical Clinic. The Wildlife Medical Clinic accepts ill, injured, or orphaned wildlife (except for skunks and bats) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Emergency services are available 24 hours/day. Drop off injured animals at the front desk or emergency room (after hours) of the University of Illinois Small Animal Clinic at 1008 Hazelwood Drive, Urbana, IL.

Pet Training and Advice

Animals Adopted from CCHS - If you're having a problem with your recently adopted pet, please call the shelter and speak with our Adoptions Staff or Animal Behavior Specialist about your concerns. If the problem is beyond our level of expertise, we will help you to find the assistance you need. 217-344-7297.

Animal Rescue and Sheltering Organizations

Hospice Hearts provides care to cats and dogs whose owners can no longer to care for them due to nursing home admission, serious illness, or death.  

Moore's Rescue Ranch was created to help pets with physical disabilities for loving homes with families who may have faced similar challenges in life. 

CatSnap offers spay and neuter assistance and basic veterinary treatment - including flea and parasite treatment and routine vaccinations - to needy or unowned animals, typically cats. The organization also has a limited intake, adoption program. All animals are in foster homes or housed at the Champaign PetSmart.

Crosswinds Equine Rescue, located near Champaign and Danville, Illinois, provides rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming for at-risk horses, as well as owner education, training, and farrier services.

Dog Parks

Champaign Park District Dog Park - "Located on seven acres near the southeast corner of Windsor and Rising Roads, this park features a 4 foot fence, double-gated entry area, separate areas for large and small dogs, parking lot, and trash cans/dog waste stations."

Urbana Park District Dog Park - "The Urbana Park District Dog Park is a 10-acre space featuring a shaded area in the park's center and lots of open meadow for running." 1501 E. Perkins Road, Urbana.
