34th  ANNUAL  GIANT  GARAGE  SALE  BENEFITS HOMELESS PETS

Urbana, Ill. —  Donations of your unwanted goods to the 34th annual Champaign County Humane Society GIANT Garage Sale can benefit the unwanted pets cared for by CCHS.

The sale returns to the former County Market store at 312 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign, Memorial Day weekend.

“Again this year, County Market has generously agreed to loan us the use of their vacant store, which provides ample space and delightful means to display our wares, from plants in the former salad bar to DVDs and linens in the freezer,” said Mary Tiefenbrunn, executive director of CCHS.

The GIANT Garage Sale is the second largest annual fundraiser for Champaign County Humane Society,” said Mare Payne, the chair of the sale.

“Last year we made more than $67,000 for the care of the animals that come to the shelter, which brought our total sales to more than a million dollars over the 33-year history of the sale,” Payne said.

Donations of good, usable, unbroken items will be accepted at 312 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign,  from noon to 6 p.m. May 17-18 (Thursday-Friday), 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 19 (Saturday) and noon to 3 p.m. May 20 (Sunday).

The spectacular Memorial Day weekend sale runs 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 25 (Friday) and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 26 (Saturday). A $3 admission fee is charged from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday only. A $3 bag sale runs from 3-6 p.m. Saturday. A giveaway of leftovers is set for 10 a.m. to noon May 27 (Sunday), with a $1 admission.

All proceeds support the work of the Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St., Urbana.

Volunteers to sort, organize, sell and clean up are needed beginning May 13 (Sunday), and continuing through May 29 (Tuesday). An orientation for new volunteers will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 16 (Wednesday) at the sale site.

“The success of the sale – and it is very successful – depends on four factors: Generous donors who give their goods; committed volunteers who give their time; devoted shoppers who come seeking bargains; and all of the above who spread the word about this great sale,” Payne said.

What donations are accepted? Clothing, books, jewelry, housewares, small appliances, toys, tools, gardening supplies, holiday decorations, sports equipment, animal-care items and other treasures no longer needed. Large pieces of furniture and large kitchen appliances, windows, doors, tires, paint, chemicals and sets of encyclopedias will not be accepted, but just about everything else is needed.

Last year, 132 volunteers contributed 4,847 hours during the two weeks of the sale.
